Minutes
of UK sea ice meeting in DAMTP on 27 & 28 September 2004
The
meeting was attended by about 40 UK sea ice researchers, with a broad cross
section of tenured academics, PDRAs, PhD students, and government employees
present.
There were 16 talks, 12 posters and a laboratory demonstration of freezing phenomena
in the DAMTP Fluid lab., organised by Grae Worster. Most of the talks were given
by younger postdocs.
Each talk was given in time
and received well. In the coffee breaks, the posters were studied by various
attendees. There seemed to be plenty of discussion between the participants.
After the talks, there was
a 30 minute discussion period. During this, various comments were made to the
effect that:
- The meeting
was useful and a success.
- The UK sea ice community
should continue to have annual meetings.
- The two day format (afternoon
+ morning) was generally OK but: (i) Next year the meeting should start about
an hour later; (ii) have longer coffee breaks (40 minutes), allowing more
time for the posters; and (iii) some people would like refreshment (beer)
with the dedicated poster session.
- Most people would be
happy with future meetings extending to slightly over a day's worth of activities.
- Next year it would be
better to have the meeting about 1 week earlier because of teaching commitments,
i.e. around 20 Sept.
- Next year's meeting
would take place at the UK Met. Office in Exeter and it would be organised
by Jeff Ridley.
