Minutes
of UK sea ice meeting at UCL on 22 Sept
The meeting was attended
by about 40 UK sea ice researchers, with most of the tenured academics and government
employees present, with their PDRAs and PhD students.
There were 11 talks and
11 posters (6 of the posters were from CPOM, 2 from Vexcel, 2 from Peter Wadhams's
group, 1 from the UK Met. Office).
Each talk was given in time
and received well. In the coffee breaks, the posters were studied by various
attendees. There seemed to be plenty of discussion between the participants.
After
the talks, there was a 30 minute discussion period. During this, various comments
were made to the effect that:
- The meeting was useful
and a success. Everybody seemed happy with the format - even though there
was not much time for discussion.
- The UK sea ice community
should continue to have annual meetings.
- Since this meeting introduced
the research interests of the established researchers, subsequent meetings
could focus on more detail. It would be particularly good if the talks were
informal enough for PhD students to present speculative work.
- The next meeting was
provisionally agreed to take place in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences
in Cambridge, and hosted by Peter Wadham's group.
- There should be a UK
sea ice community web page, with details of researchers and future meetings.
- There should be an email
list generated for communication between the researchers.
