The Hadley Centre Global Environment Model version 1 (HadGEM1) is a coupled climate model and is in the final stages of development. The sea ice model in HadGEM1 uses Elastic-Viscous-Plastic dynamics, Semtner's zero layer thermodynamics and multiple ice thickness categories. The main focus of this talk is the use of multiple categories in HadGEM1 to model the subgridscale ice thickness distribution. The processes needed to model the evolution of the ice thickness distribution are advection, thermodynamic growth and ridging. Early results from HadGEM1 suggest that the inclusion of multiple ice categories improves the spatial pattern of ice thickness in the Arctic.
