Rakia is a PhD student at CPOM UCL. She has an undergraduate degree from Durham where she obtained an upper second class degree in Combined Honours, mainly reading Geology. After that she did an MSc degree in Climate Change at the University of East Anglia. For her dissertation Rakia investigated whether a small sample of tide gauges is sufficient to provide a global average of sea level, using HadCM3 model data, and concluded that in fact it is. After her masters, she worked as a hydrological modeller for the British Geological Survey at their Wallingford office.

Her doctoral research involves comparing gravity data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) to European remote sensing satellite (ERS) and Evironmental Satellite (Envisat) altimeter data with the aim of determining Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) rates for the Antarctic. Her project is supervised by Professor Duncan Wingham.
