Peter Sammonds
is Professor of Geophysics at University College London, and degree director
for geophysics and exploration geophysics in the Department of Earth Sciences.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Philosophical Transactions of the
Royal Society, a member of the Royal Society Environmental Advisory Network
and is Chair of the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) UK Alumni
Association.
Prof. Sammonds was educated at Bristol University and at UCL where he gained B.Sc. in Chemical Physics and a Ph. D. in Geophysics respectively. From 1992 he has been at University College London, where he held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. He was Visiting Professor at the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo in 1999, and in 2001 was appointed to a Chair in the Department of Earth Sciences, UCL.
Prof. Sammonds's particular expertise are to investigate the mechanics of the Earth's crust and ice sheets by studying the fundamental physics and mechanics of geological materials, particularly research directed towards studying the impacts of climate change and natural hazards.
