Malcolm McMillan has a first class M.A. in Maths and Philosophy and an M.Sc. in Remote Sensing and Image Processing, both from the University of Edinburgh. He is now working towards a Ph.D., which aims to study ice shelf dynamics and determine rates of basal melting underneath ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica.

Malcolm's work primarily involves using satellite data to study the polar regions. His Ph.D. research utilises interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, whilst his M.Sc. dissertation used visual satellite data to map the seasonal evolution of supra-glacial lakes at the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet. He has also worked for CPOM as a postgraduate research assistant, combining satellite-derived gravity data and ship-based depth soundings to model bathymetry in the Amundsen Sea. In addition to his office-based work, Malcolm has completed fieldwork projects in Greenland (studying the link between hydrology and ice dynamics) and Antarctica (using phase-sensitive radar to determine rates of ice shelf basal melting).
