Andrew Shepherd was appointed Reader in Remote Sensing of the Cryosphere in the School of GeoSciences at Edinburgh University in April 2006.
Andrew began working with remotely sensed geophysical datasets to study patterns of climate and climate change at Leicester, where he completed his Ph.D. in infrared radiometry in 1998. His doctoral thesis investigated the utility of ATSR dual-view satellite radiometry for accurate retrievals of land-surface temperature in semi-arid environments, and included field campaigns in Zimbabwe and Spain. At University College London, he focussed upon satellite measurements of the cryosphere, including the quantitative techniques of radar altimetry and interferometry. His research interests include observations of deformation and elevation changes of ice masses, and the formulation of ocean and floating-ice tidal predictions.
Current research projects are:
Ice shelf
and ocean tide modelling;
Pine Island Glacier flow and Ice Dynamics;
Ice dynamics and runoff in high Arctic glaciers in response to climate change.
