Alek is a PhD student at CPOM, UCL studying the mixed layer of the Southern Ocean. The aim of this PhD is to produce a two-dimensional mixed layer model of the Southern Ocean coupled to a sea ice climate component (CICE) and forced by reanalyses. This model will help us study surface buoyancy fluxes to the ocean, gaining insight into whether surface fluxes, rather than variable ocean currents, are responsible for the spatial variability in ocean properties on the Antarctic continental shelf. This may inform us about regional warming trends in the Southern Ocean. This project is primarily supervised by Dr Daniel Feltham (CPOM), with secondary supervision provided by Dr Paul Holland from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Alek received first class honours in his MSci Physics degree from Bristol University in 2010.
